Brett has been carving for 22 years, and became a full time stone carver in 2013, specialising in Oamaru stone. While he currently resides in Ōtaki on the Kāpiti Coast, his whakapapa is linked to Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, and Ngāi Tahu.
The majority of Brett’s sculptures incorporate Māori design,… "every element in Te Ao Māori has a deeper meaning, when you weave these elements together utilising layers of shadow and depth creating dynamic forms you create a story, and from that story you create connection …I love that sometimes you get lost in the journey and you may not see the story staring at you until the very end….and it’s a wonderful surprise.
”Most of my work is by commission which are usually preceded by a kanohi ki te kanohi hui where whānau will arrive and offer their stories which guide my creative process
In addition to personal commissions both locally and internationally, Brett offers workshops that foster community engagement and shares his passion for stone carving.
Memorials are included among his projects that require a delicate balance of artistry and sensitivity.
His commitment to storytelling through his sculptures ensures that each piece is not just an object, but a narrative brought to life.
