Lonnie Hutchinson  (Ngāti kuri ki Ngāi Tahu, Samoan, Celtic) has a multidisciplinary practice that spans film, performance, painting, sculpture, and installation art, often drawing inspiration from feminism, historical narratives, and her rich cultural heritage. Hutchinson's artistic journey began with a Diploma in Textile Printing from the Auckland Institute of Technology in 1992, followed by a Bachelor of Design (3D Design) from the Unitec Institute of Technology in 1998. She further expanded her skills with a Diploma of Education in 1999, which led to a teaching career.

Known for her signature cut-out works in black builders paper, Hutchinson creates powerful installations that explore themes of indigeneity, colonization, and identity. Her art often incorporates Māori motifs such as kōwhaiwhai and koru patterns. Hutchinson's work has garnered international recognition, with exhibitions at prestigious venues including the Asia Society in New York and the University of Cambridge Museum. Her public art commissions have transformed spaces across New Zealand, from the Britomart in Auckland to multiple sites in the Christchurch rebuild.

In 2024, Hutchinson was anamed an Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate. This accolade recognizes her outstanding contributions to the visual arts and her significant impact on Aotearoa's cultural landscape.

Throughout her career, Hutchinson has collaborated with other artists, participated in residencies, and received numerous awards. Her works are held in major public collections, including the Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Australia.
