Nathan Pōhio (Waitaha, Kāti Mamoe, Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Tau Iwi), is a conceptual artist producing minimal cinematic installations since first exhibiting in the 1990’s. His work is well known internationally and typically combines Kāi Tahu and contemporary Māori histories in relation to a given location or space, often making nods to pre cinema, 19thC and 20thC cinematic histories. His works and installations often have many layers of connection woven in between the artist, the work, and the architecture which essentially provides the work new context. Pōhio represented Aotearoa New Zealand at Documenta 14, 2017.
Pōhio was a board member of The Physicsroom for nearly twenty years, chairing two, a founding member of Paemanu, he worked at Te Puna o Waiwhetū Christchurch Art Gallery for nineteen years, currently Senior Curator Māori art Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
