Born in 1955 in Gisborne, Steve Gibbs is a graduate of the Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University (1978), Steve majored in painting, printmaking, and art theory.
Based in Gisborne, Steve has worked at Toihoukura, the School of Contemporary Māori Visual Arts at EIT-Tairāwhiti since 1994, holding the role as Associate Professor since 2002.
As an artist, curator working principally as a painter and art theory, his artistic practice explores the dynamics of intercultural exchange and the politics of identity. He is currently undertaking PhD studies through Massey University on the origins of Māori painting from rock drawings to present day rectilinear painting.
Steve has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1979.
